VILLAGE LIFE IN RIZOKARPASO
Life has changed a lot because of the advancement of technology and science. Nowadays we have aeroplanes that take us from one country to another in no time. We have the internet that has made the world much smaller. We get the news as it happens, we have our own cinema at home and we chat with our friends whenever and wherever we like.
However, despite all this progress and development, we cannot help but feel a strong nostalgia for the past when life was actually difficult but nonchalant. People lived their lives at a much slower pace, they were not in a rush and they managed their time well without stress and harassment from everyday modern life worries.
We feel this nostalgia for when grandmother made homemade cakes and sweets in the old fashioned oven in the yard. The animals were roaming freely playing happily with the children. The houses were simple but practical. Despite poverty, people managed to put a beautifully engraved cross on the walls that expressed people’s religious beliefs and which at the same time kept them and their household safe. The shepherds, men or women worked hard but managed fine with donkeys as perfect and reliable means of transportation.
Tradition is what defines our character, way of thinking and roots. It keeps us together and gives us the safe feeling of identity and belonging. In Rizokarpaso, tradition is still going strong and is highly important in our everyday lives. We enjoy it and preserve it as it makes us feel close to the past and our origins.
